11 Worker Aspirations on May Day 2025: Responding to the Transformation of Work
In celebration of International Labor Day 2025, Indonesia’s national labor union federation, ASPIRASI, voiced 11 core aspirations that reflect the needs and challenges of workers in today’s rapidly evolving world of work.
These demands, presented by ASPIRASI President Mirah Sumirat, are scheduled to be delivered during the May Day celebration at Jakarta’s National Monument (Monas), with President Prabowo Subianto expected to attend.
Key points include:
- Revision of the Labor Law, involving worker participation, to better support labor rights while considering investment climate.
- Cessation of mass layoffs and the creation of decent jobs.
- Strengthening freedom of association and collective bargaining, as many companies still reject union presence.
- Fair industrial relations, through optimized Collective Labor Agreements (PKB).
- Protection against technological disruption, including the impact of AI and human-machine collaboration.
- Eliminating recruitment discrimination, such as age limits, appearance, or height.
- Equal work access for people with disabilities, supporting human rights.
- Improved welfare for healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and health volunteers.
- Support for a just transition toward a low-carbon economy.
- Regulations for gig economy workers, including fair wages, working hours, and social security.
- Supervision of internship practices to ensure they are educational, fair, and non-exploitative.
Grab–GoTo Merger Rumors Resurface: What the Industry Should Watch
Talks of a potential merger between Southeast Asia’s tech giants Grab and GoTo have resurfaced, sparked by a cryptic “GoGrab” tweet by industry insider @Ecommurz.
Fueling speculation, Bloomberg reported renewed communications between the two firms and even suggested Grab may acquire GoTo, valuing the deal at over USD 7 billion. The rumor impacted GoTo’s stock performance on the exchange.
GoTo’s management swiftly responded. Corporate Secretary R.A. Koesoemohadiani dismissed the rumor as recurring speculation that doesn’t affect daily operations.
Meanwhile, GoTo CEO Patrick Walujo remains open to strategic opportunities that deliver value to shareholders.
No official statements have been issued by either party, but both continue to navigate an intense rivalry in ride-hailing and digital services.
